A trabecular connective tissue network runs between the epidermis and the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System). This is responsible for skin tone and tightness. With age the strength of this network decreases resulting in displacement of the facial fat pads and sagging of the skin.
How does Thread Lifting work?
Thread lifting involves the insertion of suture material into the dermis around which collagen fibres form thereby causing skin tightening. The effect of thread lifts come in two phases – a) Immediate: seen on the table, more in thin faces, b) Delayed – secondary vector of pull because of fibrosis around the suture material. Takes about 6 weeks to start seeing the delayed effect and benefit continues for 12 weeks from a single session.
What is the treatment like?
There are various types of threads used for thread lifting and among the most popular are the Korean PDO threads. These are variously sized (28 mm, 35 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, 80 mm, 100 mm) Polydioxanone sutures mounted on fine delivery needles. They come as plain monofilaments, single corkscrew, and double corkscrew. Multiple threads, and multiple sessions are required for best results and sessions are usually spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Many body areas can be treated. Tightening threads can be used on their own for mild facial laxity or combined with other procedures like Radiofrequency (Pelleve Radiofrequency) or Fillers for moderate to severe laxity.
