A skin biopsy refers to removing a small piece of skin under local anaesthesia for the purpose of microscopic examination. This is typically done as part of a diagnostic work up when the diagnosis is not clear on clinical grounds alone. There are various types of biopsies – incision biopsy, excision biopsy, and shave biopsy to name the most common types – and what is chosen depends on the skin problem being investigated. Dr Nair will discuss the pros and cons of each type of biopsy before picking the most appropriate type for your skin concern.
The biopsy sample is then sent to the laboratory for reporting and it takes an average of 5-7 days for the report to be ready. All slides are then reviewed by Dr Nair as standard procedure.
