One of the latest trends in the treatment of male and female balding is Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP. Used since the early 90’s for wound healing PRP has been a revelation for treating hair loss.
How does PRP work?
It works by utilising growth factors released by blood cells called platelets. These are tiny cells usually involved in blood clotting. These growth factors include VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor) and FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor), among others. They increase the formation of new hair by stimulating the hair stem cells as well as by providing better blood supply and anchorage to the hair roots.
What is the treatment like?
About 10-15 ml of blood is taken from the person to be treated and this is then spun to separate the red and white parts of the blood. The white part contains the platelets and this is then harvested using a long needle and activated with calcium chloride to generate the PRP. It is then transferred to smaller syringes and injected superficially into the scalp at about half inch intervals. The procedure is done under cream based anaesthesia and has minimal to no discomfort.
How is PRP performed at DNSC?
There are two ways of making PRP – manually and with pre-prepared kits. While both methods follow essentially the same steps, the latter uses a pre-prepared kit, which already has an anti-coagulant, a separating gel to separate the layers, and an activator to activate the platelets. In the former method, all are added manually. Kits are more reliable and hence all PRP procedures at DNSC are only done with standardised PRP Kits.
When can I expect to see results?
About three-six sessions are required for optimal results and these are spaced about 4 weeks apart.
