One of the latest trends in aesthetic dermatology is Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP being used for skin rejuvenation. Used since the early 90’s for wound healing PRP has been a revelation for treating ageing skin over the last 4-5 years.
How does PRP Facial work?
PRP Facial works by utilising growth factors released by blood cells called platelets. These are tiny cells usually involved in blood clotting. These growth factors include VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor) and FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor), among others. They increase the formation of new collagen, elastin, and blood vessels, thereby improving skin texture.
Should I go for PRP Facial?
PRP is ideal for people who are concerned about using anything external or artificial on their skin since it is made completely from a person’s own blood, hence the popular nick name for PRP – vampire facials! About 10-15 ml of blood are taken from the person to be treated and this is then spun to separate the red and white parts of the blood. The white part contains the platelets and this is then harvested using a long needle and activated with calcium chloride to generate the PRP. It is then transferred to smaller syringes and injected superficially into the area to be treated. The procedure is done under cream based anaesthesia and has minimal to no discomfort.
What is the treatment cycle for PRP Facials?
About three sessions are required for optimal results and these are spaced about 4 weeks apart. Fine lines and wrinkles, mild skin laxity, dark circles and under-eye puffiness all improve and the overall appearance is skin that is about five years younger.
How is PRP Facial done at Dr Nair’s Skin Clinic, Gurgaon?
There are two ways of making PRP – manually and with pre-prepared kits. While both methods follow essentially the same steps, the latter uses a pre-prepared kit, which already has an anti-coagulant, a separating gel to separate the layers, and an activator to activate the platelets. In the former method, all are added manually. Kits are more reliable and hence all PRP procedures at DNSC are only done with PRP Kits.
