LED refers to Light Emitting Diodes. These can be thought of as small bulbs that emit light of a certain color. The range of wavelengths in the emitted light is broader than a laser making the treatments very safe and low power. These wavelengths have a variety of effects on the skin – broadly these come in three colors; blue, yellow and red with respectively increasing wavelengths. All three have their uses. Blue LED works for acne, Yellow for acne and signs of skin ageing and Red for skin ageing and inflammation. Red has the longest wavelength of the three and this is directly proportional to how deep the light can penetrate into the skin. Red LED light reaches the upper dermal layer of the skin and stimulates the production of collagen. This is responsible for a variety of anti-ageing effects like lesser fine lines/wrinkles, less open pores, decreased skin redness from sun damage, and improved skin tone.
Two to three 20 minute sessions/week for 6 weeks followed by maintenance with 1-2 sessions a week for a 1-2 months more constitute a typical treatment regimen. Results can be improved by other measures like sun protection, eating healthy, oral antioxidant intake and a retinol or tretinoin based night anti-ageing cream. Other treatments like the Hydrafacial can also be combined with LED treatments with complimentary results.
